Making A Difference Where It Counts- March: Reading Awareness"Let The Words Work Their Magic"
March is fast approaching: March Reading Awareness Month; reminds one that reading to children builds the foundation for one's future. "Reading aloud is the single most important factor to help children become exceptional and avid readers" (Calkin, 2013). Here is a little fact: "The U.S. Department of Education's Commission in reading issued a report, "Becoming a Nation of Readers" (1985), which sates that "The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children." The study found "conclusive evidence" supporting reading aloud in the home and classroom, and claimed that adults need to read aloud to children not just when children cannot yet read on their own, but in all grades"(Calkin,2013).
